You’ll be hard-pressed to find a native Louisianan that doesn’t love fresh jellies, especially those of the Mayhaw variety. Wild Mayhaws grow under hardwood timber in the fertile swamplands throughout the southern United States, where they are gathered by boats with nets and scoops before being brought to the mainland. Each Mayhaw season is only three weeks long, so scrambling to find the best berries can be rough yet exciting. Since the Antebellum times, the bravest Louisianans have ventured into the marginal edges of the Bayou to collect this mystical fruit. Our Mayhaw jelly is made by Ms. Margaret Brinkhaus of Sunset, Louisiana. She takes great pride in her homemade jellies, and we are proud to deliver the best of the best in Louisiana cuisine at an affordable price. Each of her jellies is made one batch at a time. Hand stirred and poured into four-ounce jars, it doesn’t get much fresher than this!

Ms. Margaret Brinkhaus grows her own flowers, herbs, and fruit to produce La Caboose Mayhaw jelly. She uses only pure fruit, sugar, and pectin, so you can forget about additives and preservatives. Wondering what Mayhaw berries taste like? They’re slightly fruity like apples but with a zest that will leave your tongue tingling. The recommended serving size is one tablespoon, but you certainly can’t be blamed for wanting a little bit more. Spread Mayhaw preserves on whole-wheat toast, toasted bagels, or anything your taste buds desire. Here in Louisiana, we typically serve this scrumptious jelly alongside ice cream, coffee cake, biscuits, or other breads. Take a walk on the wild side by using Mayhaw jelly as a flavor additive for meats, poultry, or your favorite barbecue sauce.
